VAT Calculator

Add VAT to a net amount or work backwards from a VAT-inclusive price in seconds.

Calculator inputs

How the calculator works

The VAT tool applies the selected rate to a net amount when you add VAT, or separates the VAT portion from a VAT-inclusive amount when you extract it.

Example calculation

At the standard 15% rate, adding VAT to R1,000 produces R1,150 including VAT and R150 VAT. Extracting VAT from R1,150 returns R1,000 before VAT.

Frequently asked questions

What VAT rate does South Africa use?
This tool defaults to the standard 15% rate. Some goods or services may be zero-rated or treated differently, so confirm the transaction with SARS guidance.
How do I calculate VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive amount by 1.15 to estimate the amount before VAT at a 15% rate; the difference is the VAT portion.
